Confusion Reigns Supreme
There seems to be a lot of confusion surrounding the Jaeger-LeCoultre (JLC) watch brand. To set the record straight, Jaeger and LeCoultre watches are made by the same company and have been since 1903 – they just didn’t get around to amalgamating the company names together until 1937. Secondly, the American LeCoultre is the same company as Jaeger-LeCoultre of Switzerland.
The reason for the first confusions stem from the fact that the watches were sold in North America under the name LeCoultre from 1932 until 1985. The second confusion began with the North American distributor of the watches in the 1950s. Collectors seem to confuse the distributor channel for being the manufacturer, but that is not the case.
This means that Jaeger Facsimile Horologes are really Reverso facsimile watches. Minor point. If it’s the look you’re after, they’ll still save you a very big bundle of cash.
The Ideale Ladies’ Watch has a case made of eighteen-carat gold with diamond set links, a mother of pearl dial with blue steel hands and stick hour markers. Quartz movement, scratch resistant sapphire crystal and a solid case back. The Dual Time Men’s Watch is made from eighteen-carat rose gold on a brown leather bracelet, with a black dial, gold hands and index hour markers. There is a date display at three o’clock and two subdials, showing sixty seconds and twelve hours, with automatic movement. I can feel you cringing now, but the price tag for each watch is well over eleven-thousand dollars.
So, if this is the look you’re after, but you don’t have a spare eleven thousand dollars to spend on a watch, consider a Jaeger replica watch. It will set you back about three hundred dollars. Need I say more?
